The Barn at Oakwood Gardens Wedding | Portland Wedding Photographer

Some weddings are big in the best way. Josie and Carson's day at The Barn at Oakwood Gardens in Hillsboro had around 150 guests, and I'd still call it one of the most intimate weddings I've photographed. Every single person there was invited with purpose. To me, that's what "intimate" really means: it's not a number, it's that everyone in the room is someone the couple loves and wants there.

I'm a Portland wedding photographer, and this is the kind of day I love most. Here's how it all unfolded.

Rain the Day Before, Then Sunshine in Hillsboro

I photographed an elopement the day before that got absolutely dumped on with rain. So when I woke up on September 5th and saw a clear, sunny sky, I may have done a little happy dance. Josie and Carson got the beautiful day they deserved and hoped for.

Getting Ready and a First Look by the Willow Tree

We started at the girls' Airbnb for getting-ready photos: the dresses (custom made for Josie by a family friend, truly beautiful), the little details, and the quiet moments before everything got busy.

From there we headed to the venue for Josie and Carson's first look near a willow tree on the property. I love first looks for how they slow the day down. It gave them a private moment together before the crowd arrived, and it gave me some of my favorite emotional frames from the day.

Bridal Party Photos and Candids

We spent about 30 minutes on the bridal party. My second shooter took the groom and groomsmen while I took the girls, then we brought everyone back together for relaxed candids of the whole group. Splitting up kept things fast and fun, with nobody standing around waiting.

Wedding Family Photos Done in 25-30 Minutes

Family photos are where I do one of my favorite behind-the-scenes things: I reorganize the shot list to make it as efficient as possible. Josie and Carson had about 40+ pairings, and we finished in roughly 25 to 30 minutes.

That gave them over half an hour to grab water, relax, touch up, and just hang out together before the ceremony. Your day should leave room to breathe, and the photo list shouldn't take that away.

Ceremony at The Barn at Oakwood Gardens

Their church pastor, who drove out from Corvallis, Oregon officiated. The vows were beautiful. Carson was crying, Josie lost it a few times and Josie's mom and dad were shedding tears pretty much the whole day as their baby girl married the love of her life right in front of them.

By the time the ceremony started, the sun was filtering through the oak tree and landing right on the two of them, golden and warm. I couldn't have asked for better light.

Golden Hour Couple Portraits, Just the Two of Them

Right after the ceremony, while guests headed to cocktail hour for drinks and appetizers, I pulled Josie and Carson away for a 10-15 minute bridal session. We walked to a different part of the property and caught them with that just-married excitement still buzzing.

This is something I always build into a wedding day. A lot of couples tell me they just want the day captured as it happens, and that's what I do. But I've also met plenty of couples who came to me later for anniversary or maternity photos, wishing they had more portraits of just the two of them from their wedding day. (I understand the feeling. As a bride myself, I know how fast it all goes.) So I carve out a few short windows throughout the day. It never feels like a photoshoot all day long, and you leave with plenty of frames of just the two of you.

And if posing makes you nervous, I've got you. I almost never say "stand here, do this." I give you movement and little prompts, kind of like directing a movie, so you can forget the camera is there and just be with each other.

Reception, Speeches, and Dancing

The reception was full of laughter, tears, and joy, and then even more joy once the dancing started. They threw quite the party, and I loved every minute of it.

One moment from Josie's dad's speech has stayed with me. He talked about how, while she was planning the wedding, she wanted pockets in her dress for her phone. His answer: you don't need pockets, because everyone you love will be there to celebrate with you.

That's the whole thing, isn't it? That's what makes a wedding feel intimate, whether it has 15 guests or 150+.

Wedding Photography Questions Couples Often Ask

How long should family photos take at a wedding? With a reorganized shot list, about 40+pairings took us 25 to 30 minutes. That left Josie and Carson over half an hour to relax before the ceremony.

Will we get portraits of just the two of us? Yes. I carve out a few short windows during the day, including a 10-30 minute golden hour session, so it never feels like a photoshoot all day.

I get awkward in front of the camera. Is that okay? Completely. I give you movement and little prompts instead of rigid poses, so you can forget the camera is there.

Do you photograph weddings outside Portland? Yes. I'm based in Portland and photograph weddings throughout Oregon and the PNW, and I'm open to destination weddings for the right love story.
